A Look in the Past with IAMSU!

thebasedpastTo continue our brand new feature ‘A Look in the Past’ we are going back to an early interview with the homie and long time friend IAMSU!. This goes way back to July of 2011 when he was about to release the deluxe version of his ‘Young California’ mixtape. Check it out below (mind you that the interview is completely unaltered) and keep it locked in for who’s up next and more features on IAMSU! in the future. Yee!

Tell us about yourself. Whats your name? Where are you from?
I’m Iamsu!, from Richmond, California

What does the word “based” mean to you?
The word based means a lot of things to me, it means being original, being innovative, being positive, just something that represents being yourself and being unapologetic.

How did you get into the music industry? What inspired you?
I started off producing for the Diligentz when I was 16. I produced for a lot of local acts around the bay then I decided to do my solo artist thing. My biggest inspiration would have to be Kanye West. His first album really inspired me to go as far as I can musically.

What upcoming projects are you working on?
I’m working on the Deluxe edition of my latest mix tape “Young California” that should be on iTunes in the next few weeks. I’m also attempting to shoot 100 videos within the summer so lets see how that goes.

Are there any artists out there you would like to work with, but haven’t got the chance yet?
Definitely Pharrell, Jay-Z those are the first names that come to mind but I want to work with everyone.

Who are your favorite artists right now?
My favorite artist right now is probably Big Sean or YG. Big Sean but hes insane lyrically and YG makes hella fun party music. I slap hella Lil B too.

What are some things that people don’t know about you?
I’ve never eaten a burger in my life. I’m scared of roller coasters but wanted to be a roller coaster designer when I was 12.

What’s some advice you can give the people that want to get into the music industry?
Persistence is key, also how quick your turnaround is. Procrastination is a killer and the worst when your trying to be a musician.
