“I can’t believe this movie exists.”

Review: It’s crazy to think back on my teenage self in 2008 heading out to the theater to see Iron Man, I had no idea what I was in-store for. Fast forward and it’s not only been 11 years, but 22 films — it’s 2019 and I’m sitting in the theater again on opening night for Avengers: Endgame. This isn’t just a movie, it’s an event, something to be celebrated and something that will never be done again. The amount of detail that’s gone into the story telling is truly incredible, because it’s over a decade later and everything has come full-circle. I’m beyond the point of words without spoiling the entire thing, it’s incredibly difficult to speak on a movie that has a three hour runtime, but as promised, no spoilers of any kind.

Avengers: Endgame has everything you could want and then some! I came in with an extremely high-bar and didn’t come out disappointed. It’s one of the best features, films, motion pictures — whatever you want to call it, that I’ve seen in my lifetime. So much is being thrown at you that the 181-minute runtime feels like you’ve just watched an episode of a 30-minute sitcom. You’re not just stumbling into a long-movie, you’re invested — it’s become part of your life. That could sound funny, but 22 films isn’t a joke. This is the payoff, and boy, does it payoff.

While this film will give you jaw dropping moments, the hilarious humor you’ve come to expect, thrilling-action-packed sequences (some of which you didn’t know could come to life) — the most impactful scenes were actually the small-scale intimate moments. So many things inside this movie hit the mark. Every character was at their best, every character had their moment, every arc over the last decade was filled, like I’ll keep saying for the coming months, “I can’t believe this movie exists.” Everything was done right.

You will sit in awe, you will laugh, you will cry, you will cheer. This movie did things cinematically that were just unreal — I don’t know what else to say. I left the theater shaking — did I really just experience that?

Two words that have been tossed around that I disagree with is the term “fan service.” Fan service (at least to me) is just an excuse for when a franchise throws gold nuggets and callbacks at you with no depth. If you believe a 22-movie franchise spanning 11 years is just fan service, we’ll have to agree you’re wrong. I don’t believe Avengers: Endgame is that, I think it’s a love letter to all the fans.

Ultimately, the Marvel Universe will go on, but nothing like this saga will ever be done again — not in our lifetime, or the next — never. Do yourself a favor and get out to the theater to see it, I’ll be seeing it a second time this weekend.

Don’t spoil the movie.

Cheers,

Matt.
