Something that tends to happen in the Academy Awards is a narrative — something that Laura Dern has done all 2019. While she gets the nomination in Marriage Story, did you see her work and feel her presence in Little Women? Did you see her in HBO’s Big Little Lies? It seems like every role she is casted for she shines — I don’t know if this makes sense, but I always feel that she’s a great person outside of acting — and it shows in her acting.
I can’t leave this category without speaking on Florence Pugh. While she is a new-comer compared to Laura Dern she also had an amazing 2019. All of her work in Little Women, Midsommar & Fighting with my Family show that she’s just getting started making waves in the industry. It’s unfortunate that she’s up against Laura, because that’s the only reason she won’t win.
