Review –
Creating genuinely silly humor is no simple task—it takes more than just randomness; it requires a perfect blend of joy, cleverness, and well-timed execution. Dog Man, the newest adaptation of Dav Pilkey’s beloved graphic novels, nails this balance effortlessly. Combining comedy, action, and heartfelt moments, the film bursts with energy and fun. Directed and co-written by Peter Hastings, who previously teamed up with Pilkey on Captain Underpants, the pair masterfully craft a sense of controlled chaos that delights children while keeping adults entertained. Hastings describes Pilkey’s signature approach as “playful anarchy,” yet amidst the wild antics, there remains a strong moral core.
Visually, the animation bursts with color and creativity, mixing realistic textures with exaggerated, cartoon-like expressions that bring the characters to life. The humor is equally layered—kids will delight in the goofy antics, while adults will catch clever nods to pop culture.
Not to give away too much of the film, but just when you think you’ve figured out the story, the film takes a touching turn when the main villain decides to clone himself. Rather than creating an equally villainous twin, he unintentionally produces a small, affectionate kitten — how adorable. Unlike his counterpart, this kitten is sweet, curious, and full of love. When this unexpected development occurs, audiences get to see his character evolve, moving from frustration to genuine care and responsibility.
The film’s humor is fast and clever, packed with jokes that land well on multiple viewings. Beyond the laughs, Dog Man offers meaningful themes for families to discuss. Petey’s struggle with identity—wondering why Li’l Petey is so different from him—raises questions about nature vs. nurture. Meanwhile, Dog Man’s boundless optimism clashes with Petey’s more cynical worldview, highlighting how different perspectives shape behavior. With over a dozen books in the Dog Man series, there’s no shortage of material for future adaptations, and if this film is any indication, fans have plenty more fun, laughter, and heartwarming moments to look forward to. I hope we get more because the kids loved viewing this for a second time!
