Review: Sinners (4K)

From Warner Bros. Pictures and Ryan Coogler, director of “Black Panther” and “Creed” and starring Michael B. Jordan, the critically acclaimed film has a “certified fresh” 97% Rotten Tomatoes score and is among the highest grossing horror movies of all time with a global box office of more than $316 million. “Sinners” posted the largest opening for an original film since “Us” was released in 2019 and is the only horror film in over 35 years to receive an “A” CinemaScore.

Trying to leave their troubled lives behind, twin brothers (Jordan) return to their hometown to start again, only to discover that an even greater evil is waiting to welcome them back.

“A Fearless, Memorable Fusion of the Past and the Paranormal.”

Review –

Ryan Coogler’s Sinners really surprised me—in the best way. It’s a bold mix of historical drama and supernatural horror that shouldn’t work on paper, but mostly does. It’s not perfect, but the risks it takes, the atmosphere it builds, and the music that drives it make it one of the most unique and memorable movies I’ve seen in a while.

Visually, this movie is incredible. I watched the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray version, and it looks stunning. The detail is super sharp, the colors pop, and the black levels are deep and clean. The IMAX scenes especially stand out, and the Dolby Vision really helps with little details like lighting in the juke joint scenes and the texture in clothing. You can tell a lot of care went into the presentation, and it pays off.

The story itself is personal for Coogler—you can feel it. He draws a lot from Southern blues and artists like Howlin’ Wolf (he even mentioned “Wang Dang Doodle” as an influence), which really comes through in the film’s tone and soundtrack. The film is definitely ambitious. It doesn’t always hit every note perfectly, and a couple parts felt a little uneven, but there’s still a lot to admire. Michael B. Jordan gives not one but two really strong performances, and the supporting cast holds their own.

I was given the Standard 4K Edition from Warner Brothers which includes both the 4K and Blu-ray discs. If you want the Steelbook you better run out and find it as it’s already becoming hard to find. I believe all the copies come with all the same special features as the regular release, and the packaging is definitely a bonus if you’re into collecting.

Bottom line: Sinners isn’t flawless, but it’s absolutely worth watching and it’s the best film I’ve seen this year so far. It’s visually stunning, emotionally strong, and unlike anything else I’ve seen this year. If you’re even a little curious, I’d say go for it—it’s streaming on Max right now, but the disc version gives you the best quality. Definitely one of my favorites of the year so far.
