Review:

This movie was shot with Arri Alexa Mini & SXT Plus cameras and shot in 3.4k with a final of a 2k Digital Intermediate. As per the norm with UHD releases, it was also given a HDR color grade for your viewing pleasure in both Dolby Vision & HDR10. When it comes to the grain levels, there’s practically none at all, so yes, you will get a clean-crisp digital image throughout. I don’t hate grain, but a super clean image is always a plus.

This disc is a great addition to the format because it hits all the right marks. As mentioned above, you’ll not only get a crisp 4K image, but the HDR is putting in the work with the various color schemes and black levels. You will notice this right away with the opening shots of New York City — you can discern the individual rain-drops hitting the pavement while the HDR brings the city to life highlights the neon signs and car lights, plus the bright yellow taxi cabs look great too inside the dark tone.

Speaking of darkness, the black levels are rock-solid! The HDR boosts the shadow detail in almost every scene adding depth and contrast every time it’s needed. A time where you can see all of this working together outside of the New York City streets is in Chapter 11 when John Wick and the Manager are in the hotel in the glass room illuminated with white neon lights. Wow! (Beyond that you will notice some nicely accented green and yellow hues when John Wick is with Sofia.)

The John Wick franchise is getting better and better and I’m looking forward to whatever comes next. There will be another John Wick movie, but who knows how long we might have to wait to get it. Currently, Keanu Reeves is shooting The Matrix 4, so I’m assuming it will come after that? This is a money maker and they’ll need to keep making it while it’s hot — we don’t want one more movie, we want a couple more — keep them coming!

For now you can guarantee that John Wick: Chapter 3 looks great on the 4K UHD format and it comes highly recommended on both fronts. Make sure you go and grab a copy — you won’t be disappointed.

Cheers,

Matt.
