Did I have fun with Superman even with its rough edges? Yeah, I did. The movie’s definitely got some of James Gunn’s usual quirks — more jokes than it really needs, a couple of classic rock tracks that feel like they’re there just because, and a hero who spends way too much time either laid up or recovering. Still, at its core this actually feels like a Superman movie again, which is something we haven’t gotten in a while (the back half especially does a better job balancing all the moving pieces). There’s still plenty of room to grow, but with the film doing well enough at the box office to lock in a 2027 sequel (which Gunn’s apparently having a blast writing), the foundation looks promising. Honestly, I could see this one aging pretty well on repeat viewings.
Home release-wise, Warner Bros. really went all in. Both the 4K UHD and Blu-ray editions are stacked — excellent A/V quality, a strong extras package, and even a Steelbook combo pack if that’s your thing. The 4K transfer is especially impressive: HDR10/Dolby Vision that favors precision over flashiness, with natural colors, rich blacks, and plenty of shadow detail. No blown-out highlights, no gimmicky saturation — just a sharp, clean image that looks cinematic on both close-ups and wide shots. It’s triple-layered, runs at a consistently high bit rate, and avoids the usual 4K pitfalls like banding or macroblocking. In short, it easily outpaces the Blu-ray, which is already excellent. On the right setup, it honestly does feel like a night out at the movies.
Gunn’s Superman was one of the year’s more divisive releases, and I get why. The first half drags, some choices didn’t click for me, but once it finds its stride it sets the stage for potentially stronger follow-ups. As for the discs, WB clearly believes in this film, and it shows. If you’re already a fan, you’ll get your money’s worth — and for home viewing, the UHD is hands-down the best way to experience it.
