“Illumination’s best all packed into one!”

Review:

What’s the first company that comes to mind when it comes to animation? Pixar… right? Even though Pixar may be the cream of the crop, Illumination has successfully put itself into the conversation even though they’ve only been around for a decade. With massive success of series like Despicable Me and growing franchises in Sing and The Secret Life of Pets — you have to give credit where credit is due.

What do I think their best work is so far? It has to be the Despicable Me franchise because there are so many characters to love. Not only have we received a trilogy of solid family-friendly movies, but the minions’ got their own movie and Gru’s movie comes next year. The Despicable Me trilogy has already grossed $2.5 billion at the box office — not including merchandise, video rentals and physical media. With all that money coming in, you can be sure we will (at least) have another few movies with those characters we love. (I’m 30 years old and I’m looking forward to them.)

At the very least, Illumination Entertainment has the ball in their court. They are only a decade old and they have the making of multiple franchises to grow for years to come.

I think the best way to go about reviewing these movies is ranking them from best to worst. At the top of this ten-piece collection are the first two Despicable Me films, both The Secret Life of Pets and Sing. The only film in this collection that I would put in the bottom category is Hop — otherwise Minions, Despicable Me 3, The Lorax & The Grinch fall right in the middle (none of them are bad).

Packaging wise, this release is housed in a standard 10-disc case with each disc getting its own tray — that means no discs are being stacked! Even better, the casing fits like a book on bookshelf, perfect for collectors. I hate it when collections get cheap packaging — this isn’t anything amazing — but it’s sturdy for the long-haul.

Taking everything I’ve said into account, you can be sure that the Illumination 10-Movie Collection gets my recommendation to own — if you fit the criteria. How many of these films do you already own? If you just have a few then this should warrant a must-own pickup for any family, especially when this pops up on sale in the near future. Since this release fits all ages and families, this will be the perfect stocking stuffer for the holiday season! No matter what you decide to do, you can head out and grab a copy at your local retailer today.

Are you a fan of Illumination? Will you be picking it up to own? Let me know what you think in the comments below.

Cheers,

Matt.
